Chiropractors For Pregnancy Discomfort

Our number one goal is to help expectant mothers feel comfortable and prepare their bodies for pregnancy, labor, and delivery. During pregnancy, a mother’s body produces large amounts of hormones, like relaxation, which causes ligaments to stretch in preparation for a growing baby. This allows the expectant mother’s body to accommodate the strain of pregnancy and ease the passage of offspring through the birth canal.

As the mother experiences weight gain and her pregnancy progresses, more and more weight is transferred to the front of her body. This consistent abdominal pressure can lead to increased pain and dysfunction. The pain an expectant mother can experience from this is excruciating. Additionally, the pain and discomfort are worsened significantly by the change in the center of gravity and weight of the growing belly.

Regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy have been shown to relieve prenatal discomfort, improve range of motion, and decrease the length of labor. Pregnant women who suffer from pelvic girdle pain (PGP), sciatic nerve pain, and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) often see significant improvement after they received chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Prenatal Chiropractic Treatments Can Help With:

Morning Sickness

Pain during pregnancy

Neck, back, and pelvic pain

Encourage optimal position for baby at the time of birth

Sacral Subluxation

Sacral subluxation, or a misalignment of the sacrum, may contribute to difficult labor for the mother. Difficult labor, or dystocia, can be caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. A pregnant woman’s tense muscles and ligaments from sacral subluxation and their effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth.

According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), chiropractic correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia:

Abnormalities in presentation and position of the fetus

Abnormalities in uterine function

Abnormalities of pelvic contraction

As the sacral subluxation is adjusted:

Nervous system stress is reduced

Proprioceptor activity is restored

Normal muscle tone and function is restored

Sympathetic activity is decreased

The Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. Founder of the ICPA, Dr. Larry Webster, discovered this adjustment technique as a safe and effective way to restore proper pelvic balance and ensure your baby is in the optimal position for birth. Your chiropractic doctor will test your heel flexion to buttocks, with restricted flexion indicating the affected sacroiliac joint.

This technique is used on all weight-bearing individuals that present with this kind of biomechanical limitation. The goal of this adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation and sacroiliac, or SI, joint dysfunction. In doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.

There are no known contraindications for chiropractic care during pregnancy. That said, please speak with your health care provider prior to your adjustment if you are experiencing the following:
Vaginal bleeding, Placenta previa, Placenta abruption, Ectopic pregnancy, or Moderate to severe toxemia.
